I used to work at a Ryder station, filling diesel... I saw A LOT of truckers. I made a joke one day that I shared with the shop foreman:

We don't drive like maniacs(well most of us don't). The only reason I ever drive crazy is trying to avoid hitting some dumbass in his car cutting me off, thinking he has the right of way merging onto the highway...

The "unkempt" drivers are a very small percentage of all the truckers out their, but the 95% of us that shower daily, and keep ourselves looking good never get any credit.

I alwayys clean the snow off my trailer, because I pull a flatbed, it's easy to get on their to clean off. I'm guessing your talking about guys that pull Van/Refer trailers. that trailer is 13 feet 6 inches high, theirs no ladder, how do you sugest getting up their to clean it off? (I'm not trying to be an ass)

there have only been a few truckers who have actually killed the "lot lizards" who frequent some of the big city truck stops...however the media would have the general public believe it is an ongoing problem..

no most of us are professionals and we dont put peoples life in danger...it is at times impossible to clean the snow off the top of a box or refer ...the only thing i can suggest is to put some distance between you and the truck...

a very big problem mikeimus, but they are starting to take steps to curb this problem....but i do think they need to do everything possible to get every last bit of drugs out of the industry....there is no need for it when they are pushing 80,000lbs of metal and frieght down the road..

A tractor trailer that witnesses said didn't seem to slow down rammed into a crowded bus shelter and a Chicago Transit Authority train station during the evening rush hour Friday, killing two people and injuring more than a dozen others.

The truck smashed into the street-level bus shelter without warning, then "climbed the stairs" of the station's north stairwell around 5:20 p.m., said fire department spokesman Larry Langford.

"This is rush hour so it's bad," Langford said.

Those killed, both women, were apparently walking near the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line station on the city's South Side, Fire Department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez said. They were dead at the scene, she said.

Twenty-one people were transported to area hospitals, said fire department spokesman Larry Langford. Eleven were in critical condition, including four children, eight adults were in stable condition and two adults were in good condition.

Witnesses said the truck didn't appear to slow down before ramming into the station's stairwell.

Elliott Reed, 30, was walking on the street when he "heard the big bang and saw the truck go right into the station."

Reed said the scene was "surreal," with eyewitnesses asking each other, "Did you see what just happened?"

The intersection has a risky reputation because the traffic lights there change quickly, said Meekus Wong, who works at a restaurant located directly in front of the train station.

"That was always a very dangerous intersection because the traffic lights switch really fast," she said.

"I was supposed to take the train. Thank God I took the bus," she said.

"Right now this is just a tragic traffic accident," said Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Joseph Patterson.

The truck's driver was treated at Stroger Hospital and released Friday night, said hospital spokesman Sean Howard.

The 51-year-old driver passed a blood alcohol test at the hospital, but refused a urinalysis test, Howard said.

Police led the man from the hospital in handcuffs, but he was not under arrest and had not been charged with anything as of Friday evening, police spokesman John Mirabelli said.

"We are talking to the driver, that is the extent of it to this time," Mirabelli said.

Police did not identify the driver.

The logo on the side of the white truck read "XTRA Lease" in red letters. A phone message left after business hours with XTRA Lease of St. Louis, Mo., was not immediately returned. The company's Web site says it leases trucks to drivers on a short-term basis.

Hazardous materials crews were brought in because the semitrailer leaked fuel, Langford said.

Most of those injured were either in the bus shelter underneath the elevated train station or in the station's stairwell, Rodriguez said.

Engineers determined there was no structural damage to the overhead station, but the stairs sustained "very significant damage," said CTA President Ron Huberman. Trains on the Red Line, which runs to the city's far South Side from downtown, will not stop at the station until further notice, he said.

The station is about two miles south of downtown, blocks from the city's Chinatown neighborhood.

I honestly dont have a bad opinion of truckers. I hate getting stuck behind them, but I understand that they cant accelerate quickly. I keep my distance till the coast is clear then I go around them. Trucking is a shit job, im not looking to make their jobs any shittier.

I do the same thing, but when I need to get over, I get over, sorry if I'm taking 45 seconds of their precious time. If I lose speed during the pass, or it's taking too long,I will drop off and get back in the lane behind the vehicle I was passing.
What I hate is when a 4 wheeler sees your signal come on and accelerates to pinch you out, from 6 carlengths back. A turn signal is not a request guys, I'm not asking your permission to come over I'm telling you that I am, if you speed up to be a cock, you will see the back of my trailer that much sooner, cause I'm coming over. I try to drive courteous, but do not tolerate rudeness.
Next month I will have 1 million safe miles, zero moving violations, and 11/12 pass with no violations on DOT inspections, the one they got me for was for dunnage being a little loose in the landing gear.

Biggest trucker pet peeve: Some, not all, of you guys refuse to get over in the left lane to let a 4-wheeler enter from the on-ramp when the left lane is clear for miles. I understand you have the right of way and I understand entering traffic has to yield, but you could be courteous just because.

It seems like when it's the other way around (truck entering from ramp), some of you just start fucking merging with absolutly no consideration to the fact that there is traffic stacked up in both lanes. I always get over, when physically possible, but when it's not, too fucking bad, that's the way the cookie crumbles. You wait your turn according to the signage. I don't remember the law saying if you weigh over so many tons you can ignore that red and white triangle.

If you meet the above description, this is why you have a bad image and you're probably just an asshole in general.

You can't just change a tire on a big truck. So unless it's a steering axle (which retreads aren't allowed on) we have to keep going to the tire shop. We have 17 more tires left, so it's not a safety issue.
