1) What is the difference...
2) Do I buy a HD-DVD player or a BlueRay DVD Player..
I'm looking to upgrade and thought I would ask yall's opinions first.

Difference, HD-DVD has less space. Other than that its just what movies you want to watch since the movie companies are split fairly evenly between the two platforms.
Now if you buy one, depends how good of a tv you have and how much of a movie person you are.

Like Ziph said, blu ray just holds more content. Picture quality is the same IMO.
Now, I have some questions as well:
I'm thinking about getting an HD-DVD player.
1. I currently have a DVD player that is not HD, but does upscale to 1080i and uses an HDMI chord. Do I even need an HD-DVD player or are my assumptions correct in that it will not play the HD-DVDs?
2. What brand do you fellas recommend?
3. Will it play regular DVDs?

1. Will not play the HD's.
2. For Christmas, I got a Sony blu-ray, and so far love it.
3. Most do but check the specs when you buy it. Some will not play burned discs, either, but again most do. If you have extra bucks, you can buy one that plays both HD formats.

1. Thought so.
2. I said HD-DVD, not blu ray :P
3. Both HD formats? You mean both blu ray and HD? I didn't know they made those.

They do have dual format players out there, but they are insanely expensive last time i checked. As far as HD-DVD players go i heard Toshiba has the best out there, but i dont know first hand. I just have my PS3 as a blu-ray player and i havent gotten to buying the HD-DVD drive for my 360 yet.

LG makes a dual format player and it is insanely expensive. The 2nd gen model BH200 is around $1000 and I've read the first gen BH100 should be avoided. LG also make a dual format HD drive for a PC (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136133) that also burns regular DVDs for around $300 (if hooking your PC to your TV is an option).
I have a Toshiba A20 HD player and a Philips Blu-Ray. The Toshiba is great, the Philips, not so much. I plan on picking up the LG PC drive when year-end bills and tax are taken care of.

Not exactly. BD has eight exclusive studios to HD's three, with the rest doing both formats for now. Things were looking bleak for HD until they shelled out to make a couple studios switch formats.
Ziph's right about the TV issue: don't even bother with either unless you have a TV that's at least capable of 1080i, preferably 1080p. If you're looking to get a new TV, don't ask the sales rep if it supports 1080p; they likely won't know and/or will lie about it. Ask for a spec sheet.

There are some that claim to be dual-format, but aren't technically. Someone (I forget who) just came out with the first true dual-format machine, and frankly, it isn't worth the money unless you have a lot of disposable income and have to build your hi-def library NOW NOW NOW. Whichever format "wins" will eventually get them all.

who ever the porn industry decides to go with will be the winner, same as with the ol vhs vs betamax formats. im gonna save my cash until that industry decides which way its going, usually the least expensive of the new formats.

Well, the same shit is going on here. Some studios (Digital Playground, for example) are going with blu-ray; others are doing HD. And a few are doing both.
Many porn companies, though, are staying away simply because they don't want their actresses "blemishes" to be so clear.

this has been addressed a number of times on this board... seems like consensus has been internet to hard disk.
I am going to go ahead and hold out for high capacity RAM.

It's looking like Blu-Ray just delivered a knockout punch to HD-DVD; Warner Bros., which represents 18-20% of the DVD market, just went Blu-Ray exclusive.

I say go with blu-ray, do to the fact the HD-DVD just got got dropped from two huge movie companies, don't remeber which ones. so it looks like blu-ray has the most, of the biggest companies on thier side

I hate when people say that. The porn industry doesnt matter like that anymore!! VHS it made a difference because it was pre internet. Blu Ray will win cause it sounds cool and has a nice logo, and more studios. I mean clearly the situation is different now than it was when VHS came out.

Not to mention even Microsoft is seemingly hopping off the HD-DVD train. So i'm sayin Blu-ray is gonna pwn HD-DVD soon.

Especially since porn sales have dropped dramatically in the last couple of years, since we all just d/l everything.

New Line has just gone Blu-Ray exclusive as well, and has gone so far as to say they are canceling all of their upcoming HD-DVD releases. Which means that their first HD-DVD, "Pan's Labyrinth" (which is being discontinued), is also their last.
Think I'll pick up a couple of the Pan's Labyrinth HD-DVD's and hang onto them for a couple years; they may become technophile collector's items.
