What is David Wright's handicap? I'd guess a 5. Too bad on the no playoffs thing. The missing ingredient was David Cone tugging his peter in the bullpen.

So watching Sportscenter last night they said the Mets were one of 4 teams that would be able to and would consider making a play for A-Rod. I would be absolutely appalled as a fan for them to ask Wright to move and for them to go after someone who is known to be a team cancer.

Has Oscar De La Hoya started a trend?
At the opening of Touch nightclub Thursday night, Mets pitcher John Maine followed an attractive young woman into the ladies' bathroom.
He even went into the stall with her, but she wasn't prepared for what came next.
"He asked her if he could try on the little black dress she was wearing," laughs our snitch.
Unfortunately for the Maine Man, the lady declined.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A man fell to his death after a baseball game between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals at Shea Stadium on Tuesday night, police said.
The man was sliding down an escalator as fans left the stadium when he lost his balance and fell four stories at about 10 p.m., the New York Police Department said in a statement.
He died about 25 minutes later at Booth Memorial Hospital.
Police identified the man as 36-year-old Antonio Nararainsami of Brooklyn.
They said they are investigating the death as an accident. :highfive2:

yea thats pretty crazy how he shat the bed the past 2 years, he comes up hear and is incredible. Yea i didnt realize it was Tommy Johns, im not big on reading, i just saw he was done for the season. Fuckin Zagurski had Tommy Johns and he's been out all year, and he's only like 22. So i guess it is safe to say wagners beet for 09.

Lidge sucked in Houston after he gave up that HR in the playoffs to Pujols. That screwed him up in the head. Plus Hous started jerking him around then as well. Making him the closer. Then dropping him from closing and making him the setup guy. It was all mental. He has awesome stuff
Pitchers are usually out at least 12 months for TJ surgery. BJ Ryan was one of the few guys that came back in less than 12 months. So maybe the time table is different for relievers. So Wagner could possibly be back for a cup of coffee in 2009. I wouldnt bet on it though.

09-11-2008, 12:31 AM
As a Mets fan, I remember last years collapse very well, but I get the feeling that isn't going to happen again this year. The bullpen always makes me a little nervous, Pedro hasn't pitched in a pressure game in a long time, and I'm not sure of Maine's status, but the bats are really hot lately, especially Delgado. I think they'll hold off the Phillies and win the division. They've had more overall talent than any other team in the NL for the last three years at least, and it's about time they showed it and won the whole damn thing. I'm looking forward to getting back to NYC and catching a game at Citi Field next season.

I'm pretty sure Maine is out for a while. Pedro, I wouldn't trust in a "big game" (big game being defined as any game that takes place when the series is tied at anything other than one game, or, any game in which the Mets are trailing in the series). The bullpen is horrendous. I wouldn't trust any of them pitching against someone other than their specialty (i.e. lefty vs. lefty; righty vs. righty). That being said, I think their offense and defense has been great lately and sometimes it is enough. I don't think it will be enough to win the World Series, but it will get them to October and maybe even win the NLCS. All the teams in the NL have been playing like shit with the exception of the Dodgers, but let's face it, the NL West is like the Cactus League.

I would agree with pretty much all of that. With Pedro? We'll see. He wasn't too great for the Sox in the '04 WS. I think they need Maine in the playoffs. He's pretty solid. The bullpen is a problem. Even Wagner isn't as automatic as he used to be. Despite some high scoring games in recent days, they had been pitching pretty well in recent weeks. We'll see.
It's been hard to pick a NL team over an AL team in the World Series, seeing as how the AL seems to be stacked with better teams the past few years, but the thing about baseball is that whoever gets hot and gets their pitching in order at the end of the season can get the job done. The Cardinals proved that in '06. Some might say the Rockies blew it last year after their 20 game winning streak, blowing up my theory on getting hot at the right time, but they had like a week off waiting around for the Sox, who got on a roll at the end of that ALCS with the Indians and rode their momentum into the WS, just like in '04.
I think the Angels and the Red Sox are better than any team in the NL, but we'll see when it comes time to play in mid-October.

They might not go after KROD. They might go after Fuentes. Just read that Wagner's salary for next season isnt covered by insurance. So they are paying wagner 10.5M to rehabilitate next season. Fuentes should be a lot cheaper then KROD. So they might go that route.

dave - I could see the Angels offering him a shorter contract. Im not sure about 5 yrs. He has a few issues. He has an unorthodox delivery. Which Ive read might lead to arm problems or arm issues. So they might not want to be on the hook for 5 and 75. Plus his his avg fastball MPH has slipped a lil over 2 MPH in the past few yrs.

Thank you, TS. I knew Maine would be out for awhile, I just wasn't sure if he'd be ready for the playoffs or not. That's too bad. I hadn't seen the report on Wagner needing Tommy John surgury until today, either. Just as well. He hasn't been very reliable for over a year now, anyway. Reports on ESPN today said he'll miss all of '09 and that he's said "My career as a Met is over." Fine with me.
The pitchers they've got better man up then. They can't expect to win it all by expecting the kind of hitting they got in that 13-11 game against the Nationals the other night.

I didn't know that K-Rod's contract is up. He's going to ask for alot of money, and possibly a long term deal. In the short term, I'd say he's worth a lot of money, but not over the long term. He seems like a guy who could easily develop arm trouble. He's a stud, no doubt, but we'll see what kind of dough he wants. Plus, he's in a great situation with the Angels. They have probably the deepest pool of talent in the majors, and should be considered the favorite to win it all this year, if not in coming years. He might just take a little less money to stay in Anaheim.
One thing that should be noticed as far as the Mets and Phillies are concerned is the NL wild card race. Right now the Phillies are three games behind the Brewers, and the Brewers have the same record as the Mets. Both the Mets and Phillies could get into the playoffs regardless of who ends up winning the division.

The Mets have done a pretty good job of smacking around the Nationals this year, so I wouldn't say beating them two out of three or sweeping them is out of the question. The bullpen is a problem, though. It was just one game, but that game against the Braves last night did not make me happy. They just fucking gave it away.

Pedro has to become the closer. He cant go more than 5 innings anyway, and the bullpen will blow any lead he has. He has the mental make-up to do this. If you don't require more than 3 outs from him he could be really effective.
That would make the 7th & 8th innings the only problem.
Thier bullpen might suck, but this team has guts.

I read your post before I started watching the game tonight and I thought it was a good idea. Then once the game started I changed my mind, and here's why. Pedro isn't ready in the first inning of his starts. His fastball velocity raised 10mph during the inning. Also, his ERA in the first inning is something retarded high, like 6 and change. I think we should give the ball to that Stokes guy in the 9th and see what happens.

You may be right, Rich. Pedro isn't what he once was, but when he's great he's great. As the closer? I'm not sure I trust him in that situation. Maybe middle relief. I don't know. I just don't know what kind of change the Mets could make now. The guys they have in there now just have to step up and get it done. And hopefully the bats will get really hot again and cover up the holes in their pitching staff. The Mets are certainly capable of putting a lot of runs on the board.
I am not really happy with them lately, though. Lost to the fucking Nationals last night. Lead down to 1/2 game. Fuck.

Who if the Phillies do win the division would most likely give up the wild card to the Mets. Remember last year, you guys pulled it off and made it to the playoffs. Then what happened? Yup lost to the Rockies opening round. Do you really think you'll get past LA? If you get the Wild Card and the Mets actually pull off the division, do you really think you'll get past Chicago? You basically have one starting pitcher. The Mets at least have 3 decent ones, just no bullpen.

That is the bright side. The Brewers are not looking good, and it looks more and more likely that both the Mets and Phillies will get into the playoffs.
I wouldn't go praising the Dodgers or the Cubs too much though, Wickedballs. Yes, the Cubs have been the best team in the National League this year, but they have far too long a history of blowing it in big situations. Zambrano obviously looked good in his no-hitter the other day, but they rely on him too much and he's had some arm problems lately, despite the no-no. The Dodgers? They've had a nice boost lately, mostly thanks to Manny playing out of his mind, but I don't think they have the overall talent of any other potential playoff team. Keep in mind that they've been playing other NL West teams a lot lately, and you know how bad that division is. Arizona really went down the shitter lately.
The Phillies look tougher than any NL team right now, and if the Mets can get it together they are a very talented team. The Mets finish with seven at Shea, so I wouldn't count them out.
I could honestly see a Phillies/Mets matchup in the NLCS.

I could definitely see that matchup in the NLCS as well. The point about Chicago and LA is that both of them have 3 starting pitchers who can shut you down (Chi: Zambrano, Lilly, and Harden & bullpen b/c Harden doesn't go more than 6 innings. LA: Lowe, Billingsly, and I am gonna throw Maddux in there b/c he is a big game pitcher). The Phillies have one, Hamels. Am I scared of Philly, yes. Myers is pitching much better then Hamels right now, and when he's on his game he's almost unhitable, and guess what? he's on his game right now when it matters. So there's 2, as for a 3rd, we don't really have one, but J Moyer is having a fantastic season and there's something to be said for his experience.

I didn't mention Meyers or Moyer for certain reasons although they have been playing well. As for wife beater, he put together a great string of starts since returning from AAA. I just don't know if I would consider him a stopping pitcher since I don't know which Meyers is the correct version. My guess is somewhere in the middle. (i.e. 6-8 IP 3-5 ER 1-3 BB 4-7 K) Which is beatable on any given night depending on what you put on the mound. If he goes out for game one or two whoever the other team throws out should be able to beat that.

No team comes out and slugs their way to a championship, maybe one or two games of the series.
Mostly good points, except that I remember Maddux as being not too reliable in the postseason all those years with the Braves. Glavine, and to some extent Smoltz, were much better in the clutch games. Maddux is also like 50 years old, isn't he? Fifteen division titles and one World Series ring to show for it isn't a good example of coming through in the postseason.
I guess I should give more credit to the Cubs pitching staff than just mentioning Zambrano, but something tells me if his arm isn't 100% then they will be hurting. And, let's face it folks. They're the Cubs! They always find a way to blow it. I guess for me it's like the Red Sox were before '04. Until they show me they won't blow it, I have to assume they will. The Cubs missing out on the World Series is as expected as the sun rising every morning. The Dodgers? I don't know why I don't have faith in them. I just don't. Beating up on the Diamondbacks or the Rockies just doesn't tell me how good they really are.
Pitching is definitely what wins championships. The Cardinals were the best example of that in '06. That wasn't an extremely talented team, but the pitchers came through in October. But, this is exactly why I'm not happy with the Mets lately.
They almost blew a big lead tonight, too. Leading 9-1 they ended up beating the Nationals 9-7. Christ. My nephew pitches high school ball. You think they'd give him a shot at the bullpen? I'm not sure he could be much worse.
what can I say the :mets: look horrible, but it's not over
That's right, Lee. It's not over. They can still get it together.
I hate the Mets' and their fans more. Much much more.
Yes, I have heard somewhere that the Braves hate the Mets more than they hate anybody else. I'm not sure why that would be, but I did hear that.

They needed 8 pitchers tonight to beat the Nats. We in Philly know what thats like.
Plus I have to say once again Happ impressed me tonight. I know its the Braves but for his 3rd start he goes 6 innings with 3 hits and 0 runs. I really have faith that this kid could seriously help us down the stretch.

Yeah, I think the Mets and Phillies will both make the playoffs. The question now at hand may just be "Who would you rather play against in the first round if you are the Mets or Phillies? The Cubs or the Dodgers?" NL East winner will play the Dodgers, and the NL East Wild Card will play the Cubs. The Dodgers appear to be the red hot team here, but lets not forget that they've been playing shitty opposition. The Cubs are looking tough lately, especially after tonight with that great comeback on the Brewers, and the pitching has been superb. I think I'd rather win the NL East and face the Dodgers.
Triple Skeet

Id rather play the Dodgers. The Cubs have a ridiculous team.
Plus dont forget Ronnie B's prediction / dream: "...I hope and pray that the Cubs just smash their way through to the playoffs, kill their first round opponent.........and then get swept by the Phillies. Im sorry, but I'm a Philly guy, what can I say. If they arent there then I hope the Cubs win."

Mets expected to extend GM Minaya's deal

Sporting News staff reports
The New York Mets are close to signing general manager Omar Minaya to a four-year contract extension, according to an online report.
ESPN.com reported Tuesday that the deal is "all but done." No formal announcement has been scheduled. Minaya has not commented on the report.
Minaya, 49, succeeded Jim Duquette following the 2004 season, after serving as the Montreal Expos' GM for three seasons. Minaya was an assistant former Mets GM under Steve Phillips in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Minaya began his executive career with the Texas Rangers in 1985.
The Mets were one win away from advancing to the World Series in 2006, losing to the eventual champion St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 of the NLCS. Last year, New York was poised to repeat as division champs before suffering a historic collapse, frittering away a seven-game lead in the final 17 games.
This year the club surged into first place in the East after Minaya fired manager Willie Randolph in June. But as in 2007, the '08 team has not handled prosperity well; it coughed up a 3.5-game division lead this month and now trails the Philadelphia Phillies by 2.5 games heading into Tuesday's home game with the Chicago Cubs. The Mets lead the NL wild-card race by a game over the Milwaukee Brewers.
For that, you get a

I actually dont blame them for extending Minaya. The guy put together a great team. Theyve just underachieved. Theyd be stupid to let him go. Also he seems to have an inside track signing latino players which is a big edge to have in baseball.

yeah but made NO MOVES during the trading period to shore up the bullpen. he got Ayala ....... WOW.
hard to make a playoff run, assuming the get in at this point, with that shitty bullpen
they fired willie for the team underachieving ..... so Minaya should be next especially if they don't make the playoffs

I agree. Everyone knew the bullpen was an issue at the trading deadline, even though I don't think anyone thought it would ever get this bad. Minaya should be fired if they don't make the playoffs. I like Manuel, but he should be gone also.

Well, it was bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 9th. Murphey lead off with the triple, then Wright struck out. He FUCKING STRUCK OUT!!!! That asshole. He can't even put a ball in play. Anything to get that run across. Then they walked Delgado and Beltran (which was smart on their part) and fucking Castro grounds out to 3rd forcing the run out at home. I am just as pissed about 1st and 3rd with no outs twice in the game with no return. They don't deserve the playoffs and if they get in they'll be out as soon as Santana isn't on the mound. The fucks give Minaya a contract extension. That asshole thinks Luis Ayala, a Nationals reject, can be our closer???? He deserves to be the GM for the Toledo Fucksticks the way he has gone about getting and signing players for this team.

It might be best if they don't make the playoffs. They'll surely only extend their season a few days, before getting spanked by the Cubs.
Despite not getting some critical hits (or even fucking sac flies) tonight, pitching is really their problem. Minaya had better earn his new contract and sign some tough pitchers this offseason.

Well, I don't think division record would work out in the Wild Card scenario because they are in different divisions. As for head to head matchups, I could see that. Head to head, the Mets won 4-2 so either way the game would have been played at Shea.

This is what it is to be a DIEHARD fan, or your beloved team to year in and year out break your heart, and still root for them the next year. having the chance to win something this year is an awesome feeling. It is disappointing to see what happened this year, again. I don't understand what this organization is doing by signing Minaya again. They should cut this guy loose and bring in one of the first construction worker they see over at Citi-Field. I fear the Mets will go out and over-spend for big names and become the Yankees minus the championships. They should dump Castillo on someone, drop Pedro, not re-sign Ollie, and drop everyone in the bullpen besides Smith. Then go out and sign Derek Lowe and Soiria (or whotever the closer for the Royals is). Their offense works well enough. Their rotation would be Santana, Lowe, Pelfrey, Maine, and grab one of their AAA guys (Niese looked good in one of his 3 starts). Have Murphey work on his 2B (which is what they are doing) and platoon Tatis, Church, and Evans around Beltran.

I don't really think of '06 as a choke. They played a good series against the Cardinals and were a Beltran base hit away from the World Series, and they led the NL East from start to finish. But, these last two years have been brutal. It's more than just coming in second place. It's the way they've fallen apart. If it was a matter of not having the talent (like the Royals or the Pirates) that would be one thing, but some of these Mets just don't seem to have any nerves or any guts when push comes to shove. The bullpen is just a joke. How could they give up back to back solo homers to the Marlins in the eighth yesterday with all that was on the line? They couldn't even make them work to manufacture some runs? They were just tossing up batting practice for those guys. Infuriating. Manaya better live up to his new contract and find some pitchers that possess some heart as well as ability.
That hasn't worked for you since 1979.
That would be 1980, actually. Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Greg Luzinski, Steve Carlton, Tug McGraw. They beat George Brett and the Royals in the WS. I remember the reports of Brett having hemmoroid problems during that postseason (what is it with Brett and his ass? Shitting seems to have always been a real chore for the guy!)
Try having a team win 14 straight division titles and come home with only 1 WS Victory in 1995.
Yeah, those Braves never seemed to have it together in October.
