Opie

The hosts of radio's "Opie and Anthony Show" talked a severely ill man out of killing himself on the air Thursday morning.

In a dramatic live broadcast, the fan named Tom told the often raucous hosts that he planned to commit suicide.

"I just want to say, you guys entertained me quite a bit," said Tom, who is a regular caller.
"I just was going to say goodbye. Things are getting a little harder."

Tom suffers from a debilitating lung condition, according to program director Steve Carlesi.

In the past Tom had said would kill himself on air when his condition got unbearable. Opie and Anthony had jokingly agreed.

Tom was serious.

Today he told the show's call screener that he had a gun.

"He said, 'I think he's serious,'" Carlesi said of the screener.

"My mind's made up," Tom said during the broadcast on 92.3 FM. "It's not that bad."

Show hosts Anthony Cumia, Opie (Greg Hughes) and comic Jim Norton, realizing Tom wasn't kidding, tried to talk him out of doing anything serious and to seek help.

"I don't think we really want you to off yourself on the air," Cumia said. "Jesus."

Tom, who had identified himself in the past as being from White Plains, said he'd already written a suicide note.

"Had a great run, my time is now, have fun," Tom said, reciting the note.

"I have a weapon, loaded," Tom said.

"Oh, Jesus," responded Cumia.

"Tom, let us call people for you," Hughes said.

Eventually, the "O&A" crew talked Tom out of doing anything. At one point, as he was unloading a gun, there was a blast heard.

"When we heard the gun go off," Carlesi said, "that's when it got really, really serious."
They also got him to give them his phone number.

Carlesi said once Tom was on hold, police were notified. He would not reveal what town Tom lives in, but, said it was near White Plains.

Soon after police arrive, they told Carlesi Tom was on his way to the hospital.
"They said, 'we got him,'" Carlise said.

i just can't accept letting people slide on that excuse. it seems far too popular and then people complain how tough life is and not putting the blame on themselves for making it that way.

How much longer are young adults going to screw up, before they realize better choices need to be made? I'm tired of going to Wal-Mart and seeing a mom with multiple kids. Wake up, stop having kids and maybe you'll be able to afford better things for yourself.

I'm ranting i know. This just pisses me off. People make themselves struggle when they wouldn't have had to, if they just used some common sense.

i agree, because the majority of the elderly, deserve help for building up this country and because it's a tougher time in their life to survive.

Poor working class need help as well, because there are many families that were doing great and then 1 job loss, knocks them down the ladder and need help to support the family they've made.

It just irks me, to know some idiots don't try to go to school or get a job and say how tough life is and they have this safety net called welfare. fuck that. they don't deserve shit.

obama plan really kills the uber rich, but everyone under that i believe gets somewhat a tax break, McCain's plan give them a larger tax break i believe. not 100% sure. try CNN's website, they should still have something about it

I could not find it, but what is considered uber rich?

I think it's cute that you really think Obama doesn't consider you and me "the rich" and actually think you're going to get a tax cut under his plan. I realize it probably says that, but we both know that, in reality, you aren't getting shit in tax cuts with a Democratic president and Democratic Congress.

Tony, in reality what will happen is that you'll either be considered "rich" due to whatever you own, plus your salary, health benefits, etc, or Obama gets in and goes the McGreevey "I didn't realize it was this messed up. There is another side to look at Tony. All those people who hire your company probably are the "uber" rich. When their taxes increase 10 - 20 percent, do you not think they will stop or slow down building new stuf?f creating new jobs? They will, then your job has less business, you get less of a raise or even lose your job. What good is the extra $800 gonna do you then?

Raising the taxes on ANYONE rich or poor is stupid the size of govt needs to be drastically reduced and taxes CUT for everyone.

The top 2% are the ones that create new jobs and business for people yet we want to penalize them.

There is also the effect - I think it's called the Thompson effect, but I don't honestly remember - where people won't say "I'm not voting for the black candidate" because they don't want to sound racist. It has happened time and time again. Obama lost the states in primaries that he needed to win and won the states that he can't fucking win in the General Election. If the Democrats didn't have their stupid "fair" proportional system, Obama would have less delegates than Clinton at this point.

your issue is roe v wade?

it's been decided with such cases as planned parenthood v casey (in 1992) that abortion laws are decided on a state level. abortion is not a constitutional right. if roe v wade was somehow overturned - which i DOUBT, states have "Trigger laws" enacted to keep abortion legal on the state level or keep it banned.

I just did a full report on this, so I'm like MONEY on the abortion issue.
