Look for a new morning show on Detroit sports radio station WXYT-AM/FM (1270/97.1) after Dec. 14.
Mike Novak, the attorney for the stations’ current morning talkers Jeff Deminski and Bill Doyle, said Wednesday the pair would be “heading for greener pastures” and confirmed Dec. 14 as the show’s final airing.

The CBS-owned station general manager Kevin Murphy confirmed earlier via email Wednesday that Kansas City morning sports talker Damon Amendolara is being brought in “to evaluate him for an on-air position.” Novak said more than one voice would get a trial but did not reveal any names beyond Amendolara, known on the air as “D.A.” Denny McLain, the former Tiger pitching star and ex-WXYT-AM morning host and reported to be in the running for the D&D spot, said he would not be one of the tryouts.
The D&D contract expires Dec. 31 but with vacation time, they have only 2 1/2 weeks of shows remaining.
It is believed money is the key issue; D&D is believed to divide around $750,000 in annual compensation, high-end for what was originally an afternoon drive show. But since that pact was signed, radio revenue in the Detroit market in general is severely challenged and it would not be surprising if CBS is proposing a pay cut for the duo. Novak has confirmed the D&D pact also has a one-year non-compete clause, which could keep the duo off Detroit airwaves until 2009 unless legally challenged.
Longtime afternoon talkers on what was WKRK-FM until last month, D&D scored impressive numbers as a wake-up act in the most recent Arbitrend monthly radio report at the combined 97/1270. D&D in October did a 3.2 (FM) and 0.4 (AM) among adults 25-54.
In an email, Murphy categorized the combined 3.6 “as a meteoric rise in ratings for a daypart that has been dead on both stations.” Syndicated talkers Opie & Anthony were on 97.1; ESPN’s "Mike & Mike "syndicated show was on 1270.
But the cost of keeping them in tight times may be more than CBS can handle.
Amendolara has hosted the morning show on KCSP-AM in Kansas City since August 2004. According to the station’s website, “ ‘The DA Show’ combines weighty sports opinions, thought-provoking interviews and a healthy dose of sarcasm.”
However, he does have experience in other time periods, anchoring a 6-9 p.m. sportstalk show in K.C. from Sept. 2002 to August 2004. He has also guest hosted at Sportsradio 660 WFAN in New York, most recently in June ’07. He has also worked in Ft. Myers, Fla., according to KCSP’s web page. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2001 with a degree in broadcast journalism. He’s a native of Warwick, NY.
