As long as they keep Ethel, O&A and R&F, I'd like to see them merge. There is some programming on Sirius I wouldn't mind listening to; I just don't feel it's worth a separate subscription.

I have both XM & Sirius in my Jeep and as far as music goes Sirius blows XM away, I am a deadhead so I love the new Grateful Dead channel Sirius added in September. I also like the rap channels Sirius has way better then XM's because the music they choose to play is way better.

i have both sirius and xm also, but i gotta disagree about Sirius blows xm music away. some stuff yes but over all, no way. sirius' play lists are so much smaller then xm, sometimes too much repetition for me. i dont want the merge to go through cause so much is gonna change and personally i like it the way it is.

I don't have much experience with Sirius, but I was listening to it last Saturday and it seemed the music channels replayed a lot of songs over-and-over. I was listening to whatever the fucking modern alternative station is called and a little of the "dance" station and it was very repetitive, in my opinion.
I've always heard that Sirius has better music, but I've seen no evidence in my short amount of time exposed to it.

From what little I've seen of Sirius, my experience has been the same. I am curious to see what their Broadway music channel is like though.

I also think Sirius' music channels blow away XM's...for my tastes, at least. Little Steven's Garage Band channel is amazing, and the punk channel plays so much old school stuff (Stooges, Black Flag, etc.). I agree that the indie channel (Left of Center) repeats a bit too much, but it's still a million times better than XM's version.

I really don't like the people who want government interference in this. I mean it's nice they support the shows, but with people shouting and crying for the FCC to get involved makes me kind of scared. I would rather see less government interference and let companies decide on their own how they want to run. If they want to merge, let them. If we don't like it, we don't have to pay for it. I like the free market, the control really does go to consumers.
P.S. Generally, there is no way to make a monopoly unless the gov't gets involved and forces one.

I think it can only be good if it works the way they laid it out. If i can get 202, NFL, MLB and some music stations i'll be happy as can be

I dont know the Merger has its good point and its very bad points. I really don't want the boys to fall back under the reigns of Mel Carmazon again, He's a Howie lover and I wouldn't be surprised if he puts the boys on howards network in the afternoons. Obviously I know nothing thats just speculation and opinion. But Im also told Sirius music channels are way better, I would love to listen to the hair metal channels.

I don't think that will happen. Remember, we've been told that the current initial plan is to continue to have two different platforms. They'll eliminate the redundancy of having separate of each genre of music, but you'll either pay a certain amount for what was XM/Sirius or a different price for the combined service. They're doing that so everybody doesn't have to immediately buy new receivers.
When they finally do phase out the separate signals, I predict that each will still have their own channel. There's multiple comedy channels; why can't there be two "extreme" channels? As for going up against each other, there's no real competition. A jazz channel doesn't worry about being dropped just because more people are listening to a hip-hop channel. The people involved with the individual channels certainly want to be the most popular, but there's no real ratings war. As long as enough people are listening for the channel to be considered profitable everything is fine.

I'm for the merger but wanting to know more about this so called al la cart plans there's some channels I go to just to see whats on other then my presets (Squizz,202,Lucy,The System) I don't want to be nickel and dimed if I have to buy the music channels separately. As for Howard screw him he's there to collect his check and fill up a seat.

as long as O&A and R&F are not moved I don't care. that is all i listen to and wish I could get a discounted rate for just listening to one channel. I wonder, if XM 202 and that gay channel from Sirius merge, would we call the channel "AIDS VIRUS"?

I rented a car a few weeks back and noticed the exact same thing... I love xm for O&A, Ron and Fez and POTUS but the music on Sirus is much better... the punk channel played a Gainesville block without mentioning it (Hot Water Music, Against Me! and Less Than Jake)... I love little things like that

as long as I can listen to R&F and O&A it really doesnt matter although the greatfull dead channel is pretty nice to listen to while burning one, so that part of any merger would be pretty cool

i don't want to see the merger go through, because everytime they say no price changes and better selection, we, the consumer gets screwed sooner or later. the ala carte menu feature would be bad for fans of less popular channels, since they would probably go away after not many people would sign up for them. i love the programming the way it is and love xm's music. mostly the boneyard, top tracks, deep tracks, lucy, and squizz, but now nothing but Led Zeppelin before and after the boys!!
just my 2 cents(no smiley) and it amy be repeating, bt i dod not read the other pages since i am at work.

Fuck Stern, people are concerned about how O&A are going to manage. If the new company feels they only need one shock-talk type show, then I would think O&A could potentially be removed from the line-up.
As long as they keep Ethel, O&A and R&F, I'd like to see them merge. There is some programming on Sirius I wouldn't mind listening to; I just don't feel it's worth a separate subscription.
Seconded right there, preset 1 = The Virus, 2 = Ethel.. honestly its what I have XM radio for. If O & A and RNF were canned, I'd probably just cancel my subscription. I can "get Ethel" on my friggin' iPod..

I could give a reeking rat's ass about Nascar. The only thing more boring than watching people turn left is having it described to you.
NFL would come in handy periodically.
I do like some of the Sirius music channels.
XM Wastes space with 5 nearly redundant "Dance" channels and 4 Jazz channels that actually suck to the point of complete suckiness.
XM Soul Street works for me sometimes but they need an XM Funk selection. "The Groove" sucks.
XMLed my new hot ticket channel. God help us all if they play Stairway more than once a week. I'd like to hear some Dread Zeppelin thrown in occasionally.
Oh yeah - The Merger. Fuck. I don't care as long as they don't screw with 202.
I have more music on my shelves than I will ever listen to and you won't hear 90% of it on any motherfuckers channel.

As long as they keep 202 the same, or improve it (maybe adding a separate Ron and Fez Channel), I'll be fine with the merger. Other than that, I don't care, because when I'm not listening to 202 I listen to local sports talk radio.

I don't know how I feel about the merger. I'm with most people in the sense that, as long as O&A and R&F are ok then let it happen. At first I was excited about it because I'm a jam band fan and personally feel that XM shits the bed when it comes to playing jam bands. (I don't care if you don't like them, I do)
I just got Sirius (free year sub in my new car). I mostly listen to Channel 17 Jam On and 32 Grateful Dead but I do have to say that they repeat songs way too much. It's pretty disappointing. So, having had Sirius for 2 months now, ehhh it's not doing much for me.

I only listen to 202. I may turn to other channels just for shits and giggles, but if I could possibly pay a lower amount just for one channel, I would. I am curious about that gay channel on sirius, but not enough to get a Stern-infected radio.

speaking of monopolies.... seems terrestrial radio and the NAB are scared
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20071126/014231.shtml
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has been pulling out all the stops in fighting the proposed merger between XM and Sirius. What's most amusing is that the NAB's active involvement in the campaign against the merger weakens its own argument. After all, if XM and Sirius really would represent a monopoly, then doesn't that mean that the terrestrial broadcasters the NAB represents don't compete with XM and Sirius and therefore shouldn't care about the merger? Yet, the NAB keeps on fighting despite this rather obvious problem with its position. It seems as though the NAB can't resist pulling out just about every dirty trick in the playbook. It set up astroturf groups to create a pretend grassroots campaign against the merger. It also paid for a "independent" report from a research firm who had previously claimed that terrestrial radio and satellite radio competed -- but quickly changed its tune when the NAB was funding a study.
